I actually believe that he challenged Whitehead, this not just because of witness reports but because of the fact that he made such an effort to make it seem like Whiteheads punches didn't actually hurt him. He prided himself in his ab muscles so he challenged people to punch him. The man seemingly set up his own death through his own pride. But remember what he said: "I'm tired of fighting."
